Miami’s DNA Manifesting Its Art Instructions for The Development & Functioning of the City
Rome has almost 30 centuries of history, Istanbul was founded under the name of Byzantium in the 7th century BC,London has a history dating back over 2,000 years, the first founding settlers of New York City landed there in 1624 so by all means Miami is still a relative young city. There were some inhabitants in Miami area before but it was till July 28, 1896 that Miami was finally incorporated as a city.
Miami remains a couple of decades away from becoming a prominent art center outside of the week surrounding Art Basel and a host of satellite fairs but the city is on the right track and hopefully we’ll reach full maturity as an art mecca. In fact, by this time Miami’s DNA has begun to reveal the genetic instructions for the city to aggressively incorporate art and culture for its maturing process and its further development and functionality as a true cosmopolitan metropolis. And all these art boosters say the new Art museum, the Art Basel, the Broadway shows at the Adrianne Arsht Center, the coming Miami Science Museum will bolster Miami's credibility as a global art hub.
Progress has been made and today it is almost impossible to speak with Miami residents and visitors without them mentioning an art event that they will be attending or participating in one way or another. This week the city will be greeting the art world elite for the 12th edition of the Art Basel Miami Beach while the new $130 million art museum will be making its debut as one of the most important contemporary museums anywhere according to Terence Riley, former curator at New York's Museum of Modern Art.
Miami is reinventing itself and now as a city we count with The Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, The PAMM, The Miami City Ballet, the New World Symphony, Miami Book Fair International and cultural city institutions like Miami-Dade Country Department of Cultural Affairs are expanding to promote opportunities for our community’s thousands of artists and not-for-profit cultural organizations, and our residents and visitors who are their audiences.
“Art has been one of the great catalysts in producing this great reaction to Miami and it translates most clearly in the real estate market," said Jorge Perez chief executive of the Related Group. This new boom in Miami luxury condos comes also as a result of not only art institutions and events but also buildings featuring high-priced art installations to attract buyers. Buyers of the new condos in booming Edge Water are taking into consideration the positive impact that the transformation of the Wynwood neighborhood and the Design District will have on their properties. The Wynwood neighborhood, a once-blighted area just north of downtown Miami, is now home to graffiti murals by world famous artists and galleries that attract collectors from around the world. In the Design District, award-winning restaurants buzz throughout the year and luxury retailers like Louis Vuitton and Cartier have taken up nearby storefronts.
